Round 2 of the Gorrick Spring Series was held today at a nice and warm Swinley forest. I arrived just after 11 as my dad was racing in the open category which is a step up from his usual fun race, he was on the front row rearing to get going and good a good start sitting in the top 10 with a few youngsters racing off ahead. He finished the race a little lower than we expected in 33rd position but its the 1st race of the season so there is always time to improve and work his way up the field. On to my race which is the Sport category which was a very large field today of over 40riders, i was on the 3rd row so i had to fight my way through the pack to the front but i got to there just before the first bit of Singletrack sitting behind, Matthew hill, Martin Turton and the Winner Al Fairbairn and a few other riders were with us too. It was a real task to stay with the group as Al Fairbairn was setting a blistering pace for us to go with which i held for the 1st lap where i was leading the pack but this took its toll later in the race where my lap times slowed considerably each lap. I ended up finishing in 5th position just behind my teammate Martin Turton which is still an Ok result but i havn't put the long rides in so i cannot expect to still be flying round on the last lap.
That was my last race on my current bike (Specialized Stumpjumper Pro 2002) which is still a very fast bike but i am moving over to a Carbon Planet x Dirty Harry 29er frame with some very smart superstar custom wheels. I cant wait to get this bike built up as its going to be a very fast race bike but now i have got to get the miles in on it to get the most out of the bike.
